There’s always SOMETHING

There’s always SOMETHING

I got a part time job working at a local TV station as a production assistant for the morning news show. Which is awesome, gets me in the TV/Studio fold and get some hands on training action, pay isn’t great, at all, but it’ll bring in a few extra hundred every month which means I’ll actually be able to pay bills! And not have to decide which ones to not pay every other month. I might actually be able to start saving up for a MacBookPro or decent iMac.
So the negatives? Oh, it’s from 4:30 AM to 9 AM, then I head to my full-time job at FedEx, and work from 12-7, get home around 8:30 PM, spend 2 hours with my wife, new born son, and 6 year old step-daughter and then it’s off to bed to be up at 3 AM to do it all over. I get to spend 2 hours every day with my family, and still be in debt. That’s living the American Dream right there, let me tell you.
So if anyone needs any video work done, I can do it on the weekends, so deadline essential stuff is kind of out of the question, since I literally don’t have time for it.
bummmmmmer
At least I’m IN the game though.

It’s Infectious!

It’s Infectious!

So I got linked to Infectious Car Art today, and it looks like something I’m going to try my hand at. They take submissions, with a $100 and if it’s really good and the best design they pick in a month you get $500, plus 5% of sales of your design, which for products that sell around 300$ a pop, that doesn’t sound so bad. So I’m working on a little sumthin’ sumthin’ that I’ll hopefully finish this week.
It involves wasps, me, doing something insect related? never! So i’ve been drawing 2 wasps all day, yeah, 2…i have about 3 more to do, then i have to do the coloring and placement on the mock up. And may I say that their template is one of the best i’ve ever seen? It’s very very thorough and helpful.
Here’s the line work for the waspssssss

Sci Fi Redux

Sci Fi Redux

So I lost the first round of the Emptees Tee-Off a few months ago. No hard feelings, but the topic was Sci-Fi and i did this epic full front print and i lost to a drawing of Robby the robot….yeah..i don’t get it. Anyyyyyways.
Here’s that design.

Well, since I’ve started drawing, I decided to redo it, only hand drawing and inking it in Manga Studio.
Here’s some work in progress shots.

hope you like it, and i hope that somebody that wants to buy it likes it haha.

New Ticket Designs

New Ticket Designs

Just finished 3 ticket designs for Apex Booking. I bought the GoMedia font Identity Theft today, and abused the hell out of it for the I Saw A Ghost tickets. GoMedia just released a new vector set, their 11th, which is pretty handy for designers on a budget/time constraint. I’m a big fan.

Anywho, check em out. I’m really only that fond of the I Saw A Ghost one.

Everything I Know About Artist’s Rights I Learned From Being A Manticore

Everything I Know About Artist’s Rights I Learned From Being A Manticore

Theft happens, all to often, in your country, in your city, in your housing development, and sometimes in your home. Theft also occurs in the design community, far too often, and a lot of the time, the thief gets away with it, because no one is looking out. Design is sadly a dog eat dog world, we are often not paid what we’re worth, or someone is willing to do the work cheaper than what we’d like to charge.

Worst of all, are new “designers” who take other peoples work, possibly alter it, and sell it as their own, putting no effort whatsoever into the final product and riding the curtails of the original artist. It’s up to us as artists to watch each other’s backs, to look out for each other and protect our creative assets.

Luckily sites like You Think We Wouldn’t Notice have sprung up, listing offending artists and designs. Sadly, that isn’t enough, all that does is show the offending work. There’s no attack on the offender, nothing to shame him or her into taking down the “work” or retract it.

Recently, that has changed. Started in the early part of 2008, a group of t-shirt artists and designers formed together under the name of the West Side Mordor Manticores, or just Manticores for short. Started as a joke thread on the t-shirt site Emptees.com by the artist GodMachine, we soon found a purpose, exposing and humiliating thieves.

Since their creation, they have stopped an unknown number of “rips” on Design By Humans, Threadless, Myspace, and even on their own home turf of Emptees. The audacity!

Just this week, Ray Frenden was ripped off by someone, Ray is one of the people who I look up to and revere, he’s a hero, and an amazing artist and extremely helpful in the community, always willing to help out another artist. As soon as he put out the call, we were by his side. Whether or not this has done any good is yet to be decided, but we know that the kid will probably never work in the design business.

So in short, Don’t steal designs, we’re always watching, waiting in the dark.
